Vortigern is a figure of allusion, perhaps more so than any bonafide leader of the 5th century.  Accounts of exactly who he was are as mysterious as those surrounding Arthur, and serious studies suggest the two were contemporaries, with Arthur initially a subordinate.  One revealing moniker bestowed upon Vortigern was 'Tyrannus Superbus’, “The Proud, Absolute Ruler” (Rex).  It was the relentless and overpowering raids of the Saxons into Britannia that eventually bled Rome to the point the Emperor Honorius totally abandoned it, proclaiming, “Look to your own defense!” With that, Roman dominion over the lands conquered by Julius Caesar 500 years earlier vanished overnight for the now crumbling Empire.

The Saxons begin primarily in Belgica.  Instead of staging attacks into future England where historically they would rule until the end of the Dark Ages in 1066, players will direct their affairs within the continent and change history there.  The Saxons feature a strong contingent of medium and heavy infantry with reasonable if not daunting elements of missile troops and cavalry so are well rounded and can do well in many circumstances.  Vortigern influenced events for the Franks, Celts, and Teutons as well as the Saxons.  As such, no rival begins with greater Influence than he.  Shrewd Saxon players should exploit this by utilizing the political might of the Saxons under Vortigern.
