So richly
gifted in government, war, negotiation, and decisive
action that he became
known as Theodoric the Great, this leader rose from a
childhood as a royal hostage in Constantinople to lead
the Ostrogoths to dominion over the Romans and
actually advance their civilization. In a brilliant
campaign of several battles, he defeated and slew
Odovacer, and himself became King of Italy. He
married the sister of Clovis the Frank, and was also
allied with the Visigoths, and for a time, the
Burgundians and Vandals. Meanwhile, the Ostrogoths
were strong enough to threaten Constantinople itself.
When the Visigoth King died, Theodoric became King of
all Goths, as well as of the Romans in Italy. With
such numerous and far-reaching connections, no King
starts with greater
Influence than Theodoric. Wise
players therefore will exploit the political clout
this provides and use their court forcefully. The
campaign begins with the Ostrogoths positioned
primarily in Noricum, a geographically favored
location. The Ostrogoths feature strong heavy cavalry
and respectable heavy infantry as well - a combination
that can cause problems for nearly any rival military
if handled with the aplomb of Theodoric. |
