At
sixteen, Clovis became King of a small tribe. Through
force of will he would bring
all Frankish tribes together and forge them into a
mighty nation. In that first year of kingship he
defeated a renegade Roman force to begin to build his
legend in the hearts of his people. He next took to
dispatching each of his many rivals in turn, playing
one against the other, conquering here, murdering
there, always focused on his goal of winning a vast
kingdom. In addition to Roman and internal rivals, he
defeated Alamanni, Visigoth, Burgundian, and Teuton
forces. By the end of his illustrious reign, Clovis
ruled the whole of the land which bears his people’s
name today, France. His line became the Merovingian
Dynasty, prospering and reaching its pinnacle a few
centuries later under Charlemagne the Great, the first
authentic Emperor of Europe since the Romans.
The Franks have few cavalry
and little true missile fire. However,
their exclusive francisca
weapon gives quite a shock at the onset
of a melee, and with this advantage Frankish
warriors are among the best heavy infantry
in Fall of Rome, although their armies are
not fast moving. The cold and calculating
nature of Clovis is represented in the game
by the Franks beginning with the significant
covert advantage of a Level 4 Agent in addition
to the normal agent complement.
Most of their holdings are in Aquitania.
