At Adrianople the
outnumbered Visigoths annihilated all 60,000 veterans
comprising
the army of the Eastern Roman Empire, and its Emperor
Valens along with it, sending
massive shockwaves through the entire empire from
which it would never fully recover. The disaster was
the greatest in Roman history. In 410AD, King Alaric,
grew disgusted with the continued mistreatment the
Romans imposed upon his people and brought his great
warriors to the city of the Seven Hills, and overran
it. These two events bind the name of Visigoths as
the ultimate instrument of Roman downfall. Afterward
Alaric and his successors negotiated successfully with
the Romans on numerous deals of mutual benefit,
including an alliance that brought about the downfall
of Attila’s Huns in 451AD.The
Visigoths at Adrianople demonstrated with horrifying
impact the ascendancy of
heavy cavalry. That of the
Visigoths is excellent. They also have formidable
infantry, and are well armored, providing an overall
powerful military. But the special strength of the
Visigoths lies in the political aspect that Alaric
brings, represented in the game by an additional high
ranking noble, a Count. The Visigoths begin in and
around Narbonnensis.
